The Arctic Council is the leading intergovernmental forum promoting cooperation, coordination and interaction among the Arctic States, Arctic indigenous communities and other Arctic inhabitants on common Arctic issues, in particular on issues of sustainable development and environmental protection in the Arctic. Germany has observer status on the Council. The Federal Foreign Office which is in charge of the German representation strives to further strengthen the German contributions to the Council. In particular the participation in the Working Groups and Task Forces of the Arctic Council has been significantly extended and German experts could be nominated for all groups. The German Arctic Office supports the Federal Foreign Office in identifying suitable experts and with providing an online platform to make reports and policy recommendations available. A meeting of all experts was jointly organized with the Federal Foreign Office on 28 April 2021.
