Arctic Dialogue brings together scientists and policymakers focusing on research cooperations in the Arctic

On 5 June the 13th Arctic Dialogue was held in the Nordic Embassies in Berlin. The focus was on scientific cooperations in the Arctic.

The upcoming MOSAiC expedition ("Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate”) is a famous example for international cooperation. During this expedition the German research icebreaker vessel “Polarstern” will spend one year drifting through the Arctic Ocean, trapped in the ice. 600 participants, including researchers, technicians, crew members and media representatives from 17 nations will be onboard. Without any international cooperation this project would not be achievable. Generally, this underlines the high relevance of international collaborations and also the benefit that everyone gains out of it.

Also two outstanding collaborations in German research were introduced: The British and Russian cooperations. Thanks to well-established networks research facilities and infrastructures can be shared, project partners are supported and science is conducted from combined power.

Not only in science, also in political decision-making cooperation is a requirement, especially in the Arctic as an international region. Here, the involvement of young people plays an increasingly significant role. An Arctic Youth Ambassador reported on the Arctic Youth Summit 2018 and their statement to the policymakers. Their goal is to speak up for a sustainable Arctic development.

The seminar taking place in the evening covered these and other topics on the Arctic and the Arctic Council.
